Band Courses

Maize High School

Marching Band (Block 1 - Quarter 1)

Marching Band will participate in performances during football games, marching competitions, and parades.  Extra rehearsals outside of the regular school day may be required.

Clothing needed on marching performance day: Band t-shirt, shorts/jeans, Marching Shoes, Marching Band Jacket, Black Socks, Compression shorts/tank tops.

Equipment needed: Cleaning kits, Reeds (at least on box of reeds.  Clarinets no softer than 3.5.  Saxophones no softer than medium hard or 3) Instrument Tag, Combination Lock, Lyre, Flip Folder, Pencil

Symphonic Band (Block 1 - Quarter 2, 3, 4)

The Symphonic Band focuses on developing musicianship for advanced musicians.  Their performances include concerts, State Music Festival as well as participating in the pep band at basketball games.  Other opportunities include Regional and State Solo and Ensembles Festival, Honor groups, and special performances.  Audition required.​

Concert Band (Block 1 - Quarter 2, 3, 4)

The Concert Band focuses on fundamental band skills and developing musicianship.  Their performances include concerts, and State Music Festival as well as participating in the pep band at basketball games.  Other opportunities include Regional and State Solo and Ensembles Festival, Honor groups, and special performances.  Audition required

College Bound Music Theory (Block 2 - Quarter 4)

This course is designed for those students planning to continue their involvement with music after high school.  The students will study music theory, history, and different ways to use their musical skills for propfit and enjoyment.  Students need an understanding or knowledge of musical notations and musical terms.  overall music background of the student must be strong.  This is a OneMa1ze course taught at MHS.

Maize Middle School

Marching Band (September)

Students will practice parade marching in class and will participate in the Maize Fall Festival Parade

Symphonic Band (3rd Hour)

The Symphonic Band focuses on developing musicianship for advanced 7th and 8th grade musicians.  Their performances include concerts, Suburban League Large Group Festival, as well as participating in the pep band at pep rallies.  Other opportunities include Suburban League Solo and Ensembles Festival, Honor groups, and special performances.  Audition required.​

Required supplies: Foundations for Superior Performance: Warm-ups and Technique for Band, Instrument (tagged with students name and info, Care Kit for Specific Instrument, band folder, and a pencil

Concert Attire: band polo, black dress pants, black belt, black dress shoes, and black shocks. Shirts must be tucked into pants. (Inappropriate attire: sneakers, flip-flops, jeans, shorts, all shirts other than band polo, white/colored socks.)

Maize Intermediate School

  • Who can participate in band?

    • We encourage all students who desire to play a musical instrument to join our program.  Parents are responsible for providing their child's instrument, book, and supplies.​

  • Which instruments are taught in 5th grade band?

    • Flute​

    • ​Clarinet​

    • Alto Saxophone

    • Trumpet

    • Trombone

    • Baritone

    • Tuba

    • Percussion (audition required)

  • Which instrument do we choose?​

    • Deciding which instrument to play can be a difficult decision.  All Students will have the opportunity to sample some of the instruments during the scheduled instrument tryout days.  It is our goal to find an instrument that best fits your child and also achieves a well-balanced band.  The best decision should be a collaborative agreement between all involved: Parent(s), child, and the band director​

  • How do we enroll for band?​

    • Students will enroll in late August.  Music stores will have instrument rental nights.  Students will be able to enroll for class at any of the nights or during the school day.​

  • How to Obtain and Instrument​

    • Used instruments from family or friends could be fine, we siply ask that the Maize Band staff be given the opportunity to look it over before classes start.

PLEASE BE ADVISED: We strongly recommend to NOT purchase an instrument from discount stores, grocery stores, pawn shops, or over the internet. IF THE INSTRUMENT IS NOT OF GOOD QUALITY THE STUDENT CANNOT BE SUCCESSFUL.
